Tl:dr. We are launching our U.S. Crypto Policy Education Initiative today. It includes a voter registration portal to address the community's strong interest to learn more about where their representatives and candidates stand on important issues to the crypto community and to find ways to make their voices heard.
Coinbase today launched a voter registration platform as part of an education initiative that gives the crypto community the tools they need to take part in critical policy discussions taking place across the United States. Our customers have made it clear that they want to be involved in these discussions and are seeking trusted resources, tools and support.
Why now?
Crypto and web3 have become hot topics in politics and public debates. They are being discussed by political candidates, and the public is keen to shape them. This is particularly true as we get closer to the 2022 midterm elections here in the United States. According to a report from 2022 Morning Consult, nearly 44% of American households (or 24% in exact) have their own cryptocurrency.
Coinbase doesn't talk much about politics, but we have always stated that we will engage with the political process when it is relevant to our mission to increase economic freedom around the world. These moments include the 2022 U.S. midterms. For the future of crypto, it is crucial to be informed and engaged.
Over the next few years, legislation will be created and regulations developed to help guide the industry's future direction. More than 50 bills were introduced in this Congress to change some aspect of crypto regulation. The work of policymakers is just beginning.
Simply put, the U.S. midterm elections this year are the most significant in crypto's history. It will be the November elections that determine how web3, blockchain, and crypto are regulated. It is crucial that elected leaders are aware of the potential of cryptocurrency and support a policy framework to foster continued innovation in the United States as well as forward progress towards economic freedom for all people around the globe. Coinbase will remain a partner for regulators and lawmakers as these discussions unfold.
Why Voter Resources?
We have also heard from customers and the crypto community that they are interested in understanding how the ongoing debates will affect the future of crypto. They're looking for resources to help them participate and shape these discussions. Access to voting and education are two of the greatest barriers to participation in the political process. Our voter registration and education programs are designed to empower the crypto community by helping them overcome those barriers. We are ready to help by providing trusted resources to crypto voters about the issues, candidates and political process that will determine crypto's future. We urge the crypto community to register this fall and to get involved by learning more about the candidates and issues, as well as finding ways to speak to candidates and representatives at forums and town halls, and most importantly, by voting.
For the United States to remain competitive and allow for innovation, it is essential that crypto regulations be sensible and practical. Participating in the U.S. 2022 midterm elections offers everyone an opportunity to be part of the discussion on the future crypto.
